How to register?

You can take part in the challenge in three different ways:

  • Participate on your own;
  • Participate as a team lead (e.g. on behalf of your institution or a group of colleagues) and invite others to join;
  • Join an existing team.

The best performers will be rewarded with gift cards and/or a travel grant, based on their individual performance rather than their team’s performance.

Getting Started

After registration, you will be able to access the network models on this dedicated website.

The series of videos, tutorials and webinars below can give you more information about the Network Verification Challenge.

  • BEL language and creation of network edges and nodes - The biological networks models included in the NVC have been scripted in the Biological Expression Language (BEL). You can leverage the BELIEF platform (which automatically identifies causal relationships and suggests BEL statements). You will learn BEL while interpreting the networks, and use it to add edges and nodes.
  • The online crowd-verification process - This tutorial on the online crowd-verification process describes the different types of actions on the biological network models that can be used for verification and to award reputation points.
  • Overview of the biological network models - This overview explains the biological network models that have been included in the NVC. It introduces the biological processes being modelled, the boundary conditions of the models, and the methodology used to build the models.
  • Tutorials - A series of live sessions covering topics around this challenge. This allows you to deepen your knowledge and actively participate in discussions.

In addition, the challenge website help section, you can find step-by-step explanations on how to get started on the Challenge (create an account, manage your account, explore the networks, add edges and evidence, monitor activity, etc).

 The Challenge open phase closed on 30th April 2018. The ranking will be established based on contributions until then but feel free to keep enhancing the networks!

Succeeding in the challenge

Success in the NVC3 Challenge is linked to (i) the number of reputation points and (ii) your position in the leaderboard. Reputation points are awarded to participants for their submissions as follows:

  • Depending on the type of submission (extending the network, creating evidence, approving/disapproving evidence) and the effort required to propose a submission, a corresponding number of reputation points is awarded;
  • If evidence for an edge is verified, additional reputation points are awarded to the participant that initially submitted the evidence;
  • Approvers and disapprovers of evidence are awarded bonus points if a consensus is reached and their vote is in line with the consensus vote;
  • If evidence is disapproved, the reputation points awarded to the initial submitter are revoked.

Thus the NVC penalizes submissions that do not stand up to the scrutiny of the crowd.

Downloading the Networks

Networks can be downloaded after earning the Network Download badge. Earn a Network Download Badge by adding 20 votes or 1 piece of evidence. Badges gained from previous Network Verification Challenges will be retained. The download link will show up in the menu header of each Network page on the NVC website. The downloaded networks will be standard SIF or JGF files which are viewable in Cytoscape and other network visualization tools which work with SIF and/or JGF files. Your use of the downloaded files is subject to the limitations set forth in the Challenge Rules. Visit the challenge website help section for more details.

How successful are you

Reputation points are collected in real time to provide instant feedback to the participants. The collected reputation points of each participant are displayed on a leaderboard. This allows the participants to compare with others in the challenge.

The following table shows the points rewarded to a participant for the respective actions
